Morjes!

Welcome to my blog. I write about fitting in, sticking out, and missing the motherland as a serial foreigner.

Finnish Christmas so far

In case you need an update on the state of Christmas in Finland: it is alive and well! Wow, what an experience to be in a Christmas-y country! The season started last Saturday when Turku kicked off its Christmas Market. It was the same day that it snowed, which lent plenty of charm (and chill) to the experience. Here are a few pictures from our trip to the Christmas Market, as well as the Christmas tree lighting at Turku Cathedral tonight.

The general splendour. The Christmas Market takes place in one of the oldest areas of town - oldest because it didn't burn down in the fire in the early 19th century.

So maybe I was really excited for the girls to meet Santa and Mrs. Claus. It's something they've looked forward to from the moment we told them we were coming here.

Reindeer sausage. We did not try any...this time.

Sometimes as foreigners you take pictures of things you do not understand. These boys came out and performed a little play and then sang a bunch of songs. It was nice.

I love catching glimpses of the city's history - this sign is in (I believe) Swedish, Finnish, and Russian.

Tuomiokirkko (Turku Cathedral) tonight. This is about 300 meters from my office.

The Christmas tree!!!!!!
