Morjes!

Welcome to my blog. I write about fitting in, sticking out, and missing the motherland as a serial foreigner.

Toddler bus serenade

Today on the bus, Sterling and another kid in a stroller were doing that thing kids in confined spaces do where they just stare at each other. Then one of them started singing (I'm not sure who started it), and the other joined in. It was the Christmas song "Porsaiti Äidin Oomme Kaikki" - Mum's Little Piggies All Together, and sung by toddlers, it sounded like: "Oomme kaikki, oomme kaikki, sinäääääää ja minäääääää! Sinäääääää ja minäääää!". (Pigs are a big part of Finnish Christmas for reasons that I haven't entirely mastered, but it's to the point where, at Sterling's päiväkoti's Christmas Market last week, one of the teachers was dressed up as a pig and the tree outside was decorated with pig ornaments.)

Anyway, Sterling and this girl on the bus were singing this song with all their little toddler gusto. Then one of them (again, not sure which) started singing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. The little girl sang it in Finnish and Sterling sang it in English.

Since this is Finland, reactions from the other bus passengers to the cutest thing ever to happen on public transportation were muted, but the girl's dad and I made eye contact and smiled at each other, at least.
