Morjes!

Welcome to my blog. I write about fitting in, sticking out, and missing the motherland as a serial foreigner.

What our grocery store is out of

What our grocery store is out of

I went to the grocery store yesterday and here is what Finns are buying (based on which shelves are bare or patchy):

  • soap & hand sanitizer (the only soap left on the shelf was specialized ‘intimate areas’ soap - if things get desperate maybe that will disappear, too)

  • cleaning products, to a certain extent. There were some varieties still on the shelf, including lots of disinfecting wipes

  • laundry detergent

  • onions!

  • bake-at-home bread, the kind you pop into the oven for 10 minutes or so to crisp it up

  • UHT milk

  • eggs

  • canned food, except for certain kinds of tomato paste and the off-brand of tunafish

  • candy, seriously - selection was patchy

  • toilet paper, but still some left

  • dried peas

  • pasta

The store itself was not busy, though! Normal or even less-than-normal crowds.
