SUCH a difference

What a difference a shower makes. In our new apartment, it's not that we're running out of water on a regular basis, it's that our shower doesn't work very well.

Our landlady must be remodeling the apartment in stages, because the living area and two bedrooms have nice new floors and furnishings that appear to be fairly new. But the kitchen and bathroom leave a lot to be desired. The bathroom and all its fixtures are bright blue, at least they would be if they weren't so grimy. No matter how hard I scrub, the bathroom still doesn't look clean.

Which brings us to the shower. The water flow from the spigot is OK, but when you try to divert it to the showerhead, hardly any water comes out. The first time I tried to wash my hair, the water droplets hit my head and then kind of rolled off the surface of my hair, leaving it almost completely dry. I gave up that time, but I knew I'd have to wash my hair eventually.

I thought about cutting my hair off - it's fairly long, which makes getting all the shampoo out of it very difficult with such low water flow. But that seemed like too drastic a measure to take, especially since we'll only be in Jordan for one more month.

I'm no stranger to bucket showers, since that's what we took in Damascus sometimes. But again, with long hair, bucket showers just don't get the shampoo out.

So the other night, I resigned myself to the fact that I'd just have to make do. And it may have taken me the better part of 20 minutes, but darnit, I washed my hair. The next morning when I woke up, I don't think anything in recent memory has felt better than finally having clean hair.

When we move out, I'll have to tell the landlady that the next thing she renovates needs to be that hideous blue bathroom.
