Welcome to my blog. I write about fitting in, sticking out, and missing the motherland as a serial foreigner.

Mako Mermaids: your kids should watch this show

Netflix is everywhere now (huzzah!) and we have been taking full advantage. The girls blew through all three seasons of Mako Mermaids over Christmas break and you guys, it is seriously the best. It's one of those kids' shows where you put it on for your children so you can maybe get something else done in peace...and instead you lurk in the background watching it over their shoulders (Phineas & Ferb falls in this category, too).

Mako Mermaids! Who knew about this show? I didn't. All three of our kids love it - the 10-year-old who plays at being too cool for this stuff sometimes. The seven-year-old who...well, let's face it, she's actually this show's target demographic. And, most surprisingly, the two-year-old who is, you know, two, and will hardly sit still for anything, let alone a show about teenage Australian mermaids. But he loves it!

As for me, I love it because it is wholesome but not dumb, about mermaids and yet somehow about real-life problems, about boys and girls interacting but not about silly relationship drama (mostly), about girls who are mermaids but who aren't sexy.

When my kids finished all the episodes, there was some discussion about what show to watch next. We clicked around Netflix aimlessly for a while, and then do you know what we did? We went right back to episode 1 and started over.
