Morjes!

Welcome to my blog. I write about fitting in, sticking out, and missing the motherland as a serial foreigner.

Onward to crazy weather. I have never ever experienced weather as crazy as we had for a few days last week. Not in Moscow, not in Ithaca, not in Utah. The week started with a lot of snow on the ground. Then on Tuesday or so, we hit a warm snap and all of that snow just wanted to melt all at once. The result was mid-shin deep slush. Then that night, it all froze over. So the next day the streets and sidewalks were like an ice rink! Then the day after that, it had kind of warmed up again, but not all the way, so there was slush AND ice. Ideal footwear would have been tall rain boots with spikes on the bottom...

...which I engineered by putting spikes on the bottom of my tall rain boots. You can get strap-on spikes here as well as shoes with spikes incorporated in them. I have never had a need for such footwear until now.

We knew the warm temps were on the way, so the day before, I took a picture of my nice snowy walk on campus. Lovely.

Here's a look at the ice sidewalk on the walk to work a few days later. That is shining because it's frozen, not wet:

And in front of a uni building. Frozen:

Things have calmed down now but WOAH. I've seen ice and slush and snow before, but never in the volume we had last week!
