Morjes!

Welcome to my blog. I write about fitting in, sticking out, and missing the motherland as a serial foreigner.

College town

I sometimes feel oddly giddy to be living in a university town. College students bring such youth and vibrancy to a city, don't you think? They also bring rowdiness to it, like tonight after the laskiainen festival. The girls and I were downtown to go to Harry Potter night at the library and the streets were crawling with the students in their faculty-color-coded overalls attending post-laskiainen after parties.

But a bit of rowdiness is plenty welcome from time to time. It all seemed to be in good fun, at least at that early hour. Still, after walking through crowds of raucous students, Magda said, "Mama, when I'm a student I don't want to be drunk." I told her that was fine with me.

Oh, and Harry Potter night was great! The girls found out their house from a sorting hat and tried out a potion from Sybil Trelawney (library staff were dressed up, and there was one employee wearing a PERFECT Dolores Umbridge dress). We also used our three brains plus my Finnish friend's brain to complete a HP quiz in Finnish. The hardest part was figuring out things like Mirror of Erised in Finnish, or the house names. But we got them all right in the end.
